Dear Friends in Faith:

My friend, Father John, tells a story of how he went every morning to an upscale coffee shop to buy a cup of coffee and a newspaper. The cost of this purchase was always $1.98. One morning as he reached in his pocket for his two dollars, the clerk said, “that will be $2.07.” Indignant, he decided to take his business to the convenience store down the street where the cost was only $1.58...change back from his two-dollars! However, since there were homeless people outside of the convenience store (they weren’t allowed outside the upscale store), he would end up giving them the change. Final savings: seven cents! The two stores are a few blocks apart in distance, but a world apart in difference.

This story reminds me of our Diocese. We have “upscale” areas, where the homeless and poor are not so apparent. In these areas you will find gourmet restaurants, classy shops, hotels, country clubs, and the people who can afford to frequent these establishments. Not so far away, we have the second situation: the poor, the desperate, the homeless, and the hungry. It is a just a short distance, but worlds apart in difference.

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor.” Mother Teresa asked, “Do you know your next door neighbor?” Part of the responsibility of the Diocese is to know the next door neighbor. Through the CFA, we assist with the needs of poorer parishes, providing services to the poor and ensuring that the presence of the Lord is available to all. Whatever we accomplish we do because of your kindness and those like you who contribute to the Catholic Faith Appeal.

Your contribution is vitally important in spreading our faith, supporting the work of the Church, and serving the poor. When you give to the Catholic Faith Appeal, your gift will help to continue the work of Our Lord.

Mother Teresa also said, “If you want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” Your gift keeps the light burning. Thank you for your joyful giving for the sake of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sincerely,

Mary Campo
