“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” – Matthew 10:8

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Reflecting upon those words from St. Matthew’s Gospel, “Without cost you have received,” your initial reaction might be, “What do you mean without cost? I’ve worked hard for what I have!” Undoubtedly that is true. You’ve studied, advanced your career, sharpened your talents and developed your skills, perhaps at great physical and financial expense. However, St. Matthew’s words refer to your God-given talent, intelligence, and individual opportunities, the gifts that have led you to where you are now. Accepting Our Lord’s blessings with gratitude, and working hard to further develop them, begins the process of being a grateful Christian steward.

The final portion of the quote from St. Matthew’s Gospel, “without cost you are to give,” calls each of us to give glory and thanks to God through a meaningful return to the Lord of our time, talent and treasure. This involves prayerful reflection, planning and making a joyful commitment to God.

When you entrust your gift of treasure to the Catholic Faith Appeal, all who work for the Diocese of Venice in Florida, myself included, have a responsibility to ensure that these gifts bring the hope, peace, and love of Christ to all. The following pages reflect the work of the Diocese made possible through your generosity, and those like you.

As you carefully plan your donation, please recall the spirit of St. Matthew’s words. Just as each has received without cost from the Lord, in turn, each is called to give freely.

While counting on your continued prayers and with the assurances of mine, I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to you my sincere and profound gratitude.
